Point-of-Care HIV Testing in the Jefferson ED

Open "ED COMMMON ORDERS LIST-MD"

Select "STI EVALUATION"

Select "HIV POC TEST (ED USE ONLY)"

Documentation of verbal consent is automatic when the order is placed

INSTI Tests are stored in the Medication Room on the A-Side (Reference Guide). Give the patient a copy of the Pre-Test Information HIV Fact Sheet.

Clean the patient's finger with alcohol swab and then use the included lancet to puncture their finger. Capillary action will draw up blood to the black line on the pipette (do not squeeze the pipette). Transfer the blood into red-capped Bottle 1 by squeezing the pipette. Cap the bottle and then shake it 3-4 times.

Empty Bottle 1 into the Membrane Unit well followed by Bottle 2 and then Bottle 3.

Interpret the test (QUIZ, QUIZ ANSWER KEY)

Document the test results in Wellsoft under: "PROCEDURE" -> "POC-HIV Testing"

Document the HIV Test Type, the time the test was started and then interpreted, and the test result

If the result is negative tell patient the test is negative and recommend follow-up testing in 3-6 months
If the result is positive obtain a “Positive” packet from the top drawer of the HIV cart and follow the enclosed instructions (be sure to order an "HIV ANTIBODY / ANTIGEN COMBO" test through the lab)
